We wanted to share the exciting news that Professor Hanadi Al-Samman’s co-edited Global Encyclopedia of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer History took home the prestigious Dartmouth Medal at yesterday's awards ceremony at the American Library Association Midwinter Conference. Informally considered the Best Picture Oscar of the reference industry, the Dartmouth is a highly coveted honor and one that Gale (the Encyclopedia’s publisher) last received in 2001. The win recognizes the encyclopedia’s unique high-quality scholarship, timely subject matter, and global impact. It also represents hours of tireless work on the part of editors to ensure that each entry meets the highest standards. Professor Hanadi Al-Samman is the Middle East editor of this encyclopedia and, in this capacity, she organized and oversaw fifty-six entries that represented the most up-to-date Middle East LGBTQ scholarship.
