The Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Languages and Cultures (MESALC) announces the annual Farzaneh Milani Writing Award to honor the scholarship of Professor Milani in the fields of Persian literature, gender and sexuality studies. Graduate and undergraduate students are invited to submit their own essay in the aforementioned fields, or a faculty member may submit outstanding student papers. Eligible students may come from any major or department at the University of Virginia.
There is a minimum page requirement of 15 pages, and a maximum submission length of 20 pages (6000 words). Please limit submissions to a full-length senior seminar paper or one chapter or excerpt from a senior thesis or dissertation. Submissions under 15 pages or over 20 pages will not be considered. Essays are to be submitted by April 30, 2026 to Professor Hanadi Al-Samman (ha2b@virginia.edu), and authors are limited to a single submission. One winning undergraduate essay and one graduate essay will be selected by a committee of MESALC faculty and will each carry a $250 financial reward.
